Luigi files anew state college bill

CEBU, Philippines - Sixth district Rep. Gabriel Luis Quisumbing has again filed his bill that seeks to convert the Cordova Public College into a state college.

House Bill 01546 seeks the conversion of the Cordova Public College into a state college, which would be known as the Cordova State College of Science and Technology.

Quisumbing filed the bill last 2010, but the bill failed to get the Senate’s approval.

The bill was approved by the House committee on higher and technical education on September 2010 and later by the House committee on ways and means.

According to Quisumbing, a conversion will ensure the college’s fiscal autonomy, enhance academic standards, and provide accessible and affordable but quality education to poor but deserving students.

The target beneficiaries are not only residents from Cordova town but also those from the city of Lapu-Lapu, he said.

Cordova officials lauded Quisumbing for his concern for the poor who cannot afford to pursue a college education. – (FREEMAN)
