CEBU, Philippines - A 43-year-old boat operator was taken to hospital after getting shot while attempting to end a basketball game between his crew and a group of bystanders at FF Cruz Street at the Reclamation Area in Mandaue City Sunday.
Edwin Mariquit, of barangay Kalubihan, Minglanilla town, Cebu took a bullet on the left arm and another on his body.
He was brought to the Mandaue City Hospital but was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.
SPO3 Marcos Noval of the Investigation and Detection Management Branch of the Mandaue City Police Office said Mariquit and his crew live in Minglanilla but had built makeshift houses at FF Cruz so as to be always near their boat.
Last Sunday afternoon Mariquit’s crew engaged bystanders to a game of basketball with a bet of P20.
As the game progressed, Mariquit noticed the opposing team was becoming physical and advised his men to quit.
The bystanders didn’t take this lightly.
They left but soon returned with about 40 men, some of them allegedly armed.
Soon, stones rained on Mariquit and his men.
And after someone shot Mariquit, the bystanders fled.
“Gustong undangon ni Mariquit ang duwa kay di siya gusto nga daghang manga-among gumikan lang sa kasado nga P20 human niya makita nga grabe na kaayo ang physical harm,†Noval said. (FREEMAN)
