Holy week: Generally peaceful in Naga, Minglanilla

CEBU, Philippines - The traditional observance of the Holy Week was generally peaceful in the southern municipality of Minglanilla and neighboring Naga City.

No untoward incidents were reported as thousands of Catholics flocked to churches in observance of the Holy Week.

“The Lenten week was peaceful as forces coordinated with one another to ensure security. Let us pray nga peaceful gihapon sa Sugat,” Minglanilla police Chief Insp. Timmar Alam said.

Alam said everything is ready for the annual “Sugat,” which has become the town’s festival.

Timmar said the celebration starts at 2 a.m. today at the oval of Minglanilla Central School in barangay Ward I.

Traffic will be rerouted around Minglanilla especially in the main road at the Palaw-an intersection and Tungkop entrance.

Police will be very much visible.

Alam said 35 policemen from provincial headquarters have been sent to Minglanilla for the festival.

The augmentation comes from the Special Reaction Unit (SRU), Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), K9 and Field Training Police (FTP).

Alam urged the public who will join the “Sugat” should not to bring expensive gadgets, leave expensive jewelry at home, and avoid bringing much money.

At around 3:00 p.m. today, the street dancing of the Sugat Kabanhawan Festival contingent will start.

Joining are contingents composed of elementary and high school students from the different schools of the town.  (FREEMAN)
