Wearing knee-high socks can prevent spread of dengue

CEBU, Philippines -  The Mandaue City council, through a resolution, has asked heads of day care centers in the city to encourage children to wear knee-high socks as a preventive measure against the spread of the dengue disease.

Mandaue City Councilor Jimmy Lumapas said dengue has become a menace in Cebu and children are the worst affected.

Councilor Lumapas said the disease is more common in babies and young children in contrast to many other infections and it is more common in children that are relatively well nourished, particularly young students.

While it is true that the best way to prevent dengue is to keep mosquitoes away, but councilor Lumapas said it can also be prevented by wearing long-sleeved and light-colored clothes, staying in cool areas as mosquitoes do not thrive in cold temperatures, using mosquito repellants, and wearing knee-high socks.
