CEBU, Philippines — The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers thrashed the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons, 91-59, to stay undefeated in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 24 basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum over the weekend.
Reigning MVP Kent Ivo Salarda produced a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds with two assists and two steals as the Lancers grabbed the solo lead in college division standings with an immaculate 5-0 slate.
AJ Sacayan and Raul Gentallan added 15 points each for the Lancers, who coasted to a 49-30 advantage at halftime, which they stretched to as high as 36 points, 86-50, in a dominant performance.
JZ Dizon was the lone double-digit scorer with 15 points for the Fighting Maroons, who crashed to their fourth straight loss after a winning start.
In high school play, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons got back on the right track with a 68-37 rout of the Benedicto College (BC) Baby Cheetahs.
Louie Jay Estorba finished with 13 points on top of three rebounds while Kenneth Robert Fuller banged in 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block to help the Dragons regain the fourth spot with a 6-2 record.
The Dragons never looked back after a blistering 22-8 start and went ahead by as much as 31 points, 50-19, midway in the third quarter.
Jacis Abraham Bensi and Kyle Andre Nalisa combined for 22 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and three steals but to no avail as the Baby Cheetahs tailspun to 1-7.
In other result, Dan Mitchell Ferraren fired 27 points and Wade Adam Luche pumped in 25 points and nine rebounds to power the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) to an 87-81 overtime victory against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers.
Prince Juver Neil Mallorca chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds for UCLM, which improved to 3-5.
The Baby Panthers dropped to 3-3 despite the 30-point explosion of Fritz John Cary Gonzales.
