USJ-R Lady Jaguars star strong

CEBU, Philippines – The University of San Jose-Recoletos' Lady Jaguars opened their bid in this year's Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc., volleyball tournament with a convincing win against the Cebu Doctor's University, 3-0 at their home court in Basak, this city.

The CDU belles gave their best as they pushed the game into a thrilling three sets, but the Lady Jaguars proved to be to much for CDU, 25-15, 25-21, 25-21.

USJ-R's secondary girls also continues to do well after snaring their second victory against defending champion Southwestern University, 25-18,9-25, 25-19.

USJ-R showed that their win against SWU in the recent Shakey's Girls Volleyball League was no fluke after a sweet deciding set victory.

In the boys' side, USJ-R will have a finals preview as they clashes with the defending champion University of San Carlos today through their last semifinal game.

Both squads got their finals ticket after winning their respective games yesterday. USC escaped with a 21-25, 25-23, 27-25 win against University of Southern Philippines Foundation, while USJ-R won against Don Bosco Technology Center, 25-15,25-12.

Its going to be USC against USJ-R in the secondary boys' finals based on the schedule furnished to The Freeman earlier. However, instead of a cross-over, the semifinals in volleyball will have a round-robin format as explained by its tournament manager Ryan Aznar while the finals will be a best-of-three series and the battle for third  to be a one game only.

Over at the Cebu City Sports Center, USJ-R tertiary and secondary teams suffered contrasting fates in the football event of CESAFI.

USJ-R's senior team stepped up on the final half to pull off a 4-1 win against the University of the Visayas, but their secondary squad bowed down to Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 0-7.

DBTC, for their part, bounced back after losing against SHS-AdC last Saturday by silencing USPF, 5-0. (FREEMAN)
