CEBU, Philippines - The spirited spikers of Don Gerardo Llamera Ouano Memorial National High School proved that height is not always the proverbial might in sports after it stunned the taller University of Cebu in straight sets at the start of the Central Visayas leg of Shakey's Girls Volleyball League Season 13 yesterday at the
Cebu City Sports Institute in Barangay San Nicholas, Cebu City.
After being down by two points in the early goings, 1-3, Don Gerardo fought back with finesse to forge a 9-all deadlock and eventually took the set in decisive manner, 25-14. They made 16 hits while holding off UC to only five points after the standoff.
Taking note that their strategies worked well, Don Gerardo sustained its momentum to finish off UC by the same score of 25-14.
Don Gerardo shoots for its second straight win as it takes on Paref Southcrest School at 4 p.m.today.
The other teams under pool A are defending champion University of San Carlos, St.Theresa's College and last-minute entry Pajo National High School of Lapu-Lapu City.
Seeing action in pool B are the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Southwestern University-Phinma Education, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and Hijas de Jesus and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
They will play under a single round robin format in the elimination round, with the top two teams per bracketl advancing into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then clash for the championship.
Aside from representing the region in the Shakey's GVL League of Champions this November in Biñan, Laguna, the champion will also have a chance to compete in an international battle against powerhouse squads from South Korea, Thailand, Canada, Japan, and Australia. (FREEMAN)
