CEBU, Philippines – Jan Godfrey Seno and Zethley Mae Alferez took home not only one but two titles each, both in the same age group and against the same opponents at the end of the 2014 Cebuana Lhuillier Age-Group Tennis Championships-Cebu leg yesterday at the CitiGreen Tennis Resort in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.
They may be good friends but Seno showed he's all business when inside the playing court to frustrate his buddy, Christopher Encarnacion, and complete a golden double.
Seno edged out Encarnacion in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, to claim the boys 16 title. After a short rest, Seno poured everything he got to reaffirm his dominance over Encarnacion in decisive manner, 6-1, 6-0, in the boys 18 final.
Like Seno, Alferez also smashed her way to a pair of gilts via the girls 16 and 18 categories against Shane Villareal. After being pushed hard in her 6-3, 7-5 victory in the girls 16, Alferez had an easy time overpowering Villareal, 6-2, 6-3 in the girls 18 finale.
On the other hand, siblings Cesar Kristofer and Kristine Renee Salimbangon capped their campaign in contrasting fashion. Cesar Kristofer snared the unisex 10-under crown after crushing Rupert Orhell Tortal, 4-0, 4-2, but his sister Kristine Renee Salimbangon settle for only silver in the girls 14 battle after bowing to Elizabeth Abarquez, 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 on a super tie-break.
In the other gold medal matches, Venz Alforque ruled the boys 12 class after whipping Klein Canete, 6-1, 6-1, while Lyra Mae Repollo lorded it over in the distaff side after outlasting Phel Hazel Coderos, 6-2,6-3. Jose maria Pague of Sibugay, Zamboanga made sure he won't go home empty-handed after stunning Cebuano Francis Hidalgo, 6-2, 6-3 in the boys 14-under final. (FREEMAN)
