CEBU, Philippines – The Lux Oriens side went through different routes, nevertheless completed a resounding sweep over their Magis rivals in the 2014 Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association-The Avenir Cup All-Star Games last Sunday at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles Arena in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.
In Division A, Lux Oriens had to pass through the wringer before pulling off a 77-76 squeaker over the equally-tough Magis squad. Lux Oriens dictated the pace of the match after taking off to an early 20-15 lead. They maintained a six-point edge, 58-52, after three quarters, then deftly fended off a spirited Magis resistance at the endgame to escape with a razon-thin victory.
Jasper Diaz paced Lux Oriens with 14 points, while Ed Macasling, Ervin Lopena, and Jurome Saceda chipped in 13, 12 and 11 markers, respectively. Jair Igna topped Magis with 22 points. Jeremy Huang unloaded 17 points and Dave Lim scored 14 in a losing effort.
In Division B, Lux Oriens turned to a sizzling offensive in the final half to turn back Magis, 75-65.
Sergs Al Go Bui, who also plays for the Author Solutions, Inc. (formerly Xlibris) in the City Sports Club-Cebu E-League, sparkled with 30 points for Lux Oriens, which trailed by three at halftime, 28-31.
But Lux Oriens changed the complexion of the match in their favor with a searing 28-7 run in third canto. They sustained their momentum in the closing minutes of the contest to come up with a 10-point win.
Go Bui was heavily backed up by Barlowe Rogado and Edu Rama with 26 points combined. Charleson Sia led Magis with 18 points, while Cecilio Gillamac and Michael Sy churned out 13 and 10 points. — EBV) (FREEMAN)
