Shakey's Girls Volleyball League on today

CEBU, Philippines- The Shakey's Girls Volleyball League, the country’s premiere junior volleyball tournament, returns to Cebu for the Central and Eastern Visayas leg this afternoon at the Aznar Coliseum.

The event was initially set in Tacloban City, but the organizers moved it to Cebu as Tacloban is not yet ready to host the tournament given the massive destruction brought by super storm Yolanda last year.

With that, even if it is called the Central and Eastern Visayas leg, all competing teams that will vie for slots to the national championships are all from Cebu.

Led by defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos, the other contending squads include St. Theresa’s College, University of San Carlos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation,Paref-Southcrest School, Sacred Heart School--Hijas de Jesus, Southwestern University, Don Gerardo Ouano National High School, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, and Pajo National High School of Lapu-Lapu City.

Three games will be contested after the simple opening ceremony. The order of play will be determined by drawing of lots.

The competition follows a single round robin format, with the top two teams per bracket advancing into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then clash for the championship. (FREEMAN)
