CEBU, Philippines - Over P100,000 is at stake for the top performers of the 1st Mayor Mariñas Invitational Basketball set to kick off on June 29 at the Robert V. Alquizola Memorial Gymnasium in Brgy. Poblacion, Barili south of Cebu.
The event was formally launched by Barili Councilor John Añover and sports commissioner Julie Flores yesterday at the Baseline Restaurant.
A total of six teams divided into two brackets are set to see action in the cash-rich tournament. These are University of the Visayas (UV), University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) in bracket A and DG Saloon, AC Troopers and SG Mercantile in bracket B.
They will play in a single round robin format, with the top two per bracket advancing into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then clash for the championship in a winner-take-all affair.
The champion will take home a whopping P50,000 paycheck, while the second placer will pocket P30,000. The third and fourth will receive P20,000 and P10,000, respectively. Each team is assured of a P5,000 consolation prize.
Aside from basketball, Flores said the local government of Barili under the leadership of Mayor Teresito P. Mariñas is also organizing other events such as boxing, chess, table tennis, soccer, and lawn tennis as part of their grassroots sports development program. (FREEMAN)
