Brillo ascends throne as Cebu’s ‘Queen of the Beach’

CEBU, Philippines - Decorated Cebuana athlete Jusabelle Brillo banked on his vast experience and maturity to crown herself as the first ever "Queen of the Beach" via the Sinulog Cup Beach Volley Cup at the new sandcourts in Fort San Pedro.

Brillo was a little bit rusty at first, partly because she hasn't figured in a highly competitive action since she joined an out-of-town tounaments in Siargao Island three months ago.

However, the third year BS Criminology student from the University of the Visayas (UV) managed to hang on and placed fourth at the end of the qualifying round.

In the playoffs, the red-hot Brillo went on to win one game after the other enroute to a perfect 168 points. In her last match, Brillo teammed up with Danika Gendrauli in whipping Ericka Verano and another player from Southwestern University.

“I’m so thankful that I won. It’s like an advance birthday gift for myself. I also want to dedicate this victory to UV for still giving me scholarship,” said Brillo, a former member of the Philippine Team.

Verano finished second overall, while Gendrauli took the third place honors followed by Zusette Panis.

Last week, Jonrey Sasing emerged as 'King of the Beach' also with a perfect score of 168. (FREEMAN)
