Mandaue kiddie spikers reach GUV Cup semis

CEBU, Philippines - Defending champion Mandaue City racked up five straight wins to gain outright semifinal berth in the kiddies division of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Mandaue clobbered Tabogon in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18 to top group B with a clean 5-0 slate.

It was a double whammy for Tabogon as it also fell prey to Moalboal in a three-set battle, 25-16, 20-25,25-19.

On the other hand, Compostela, Talisay and Catmon are the top contenders in group A.

Compostela stands with a 4-0 record as of this writing yesterday, while Talisay and Catmon sport an identical 4-0 win-loss marks.

The result of Compostela-Talisay match will decide who will move to the next round.

Compostela grabed its fourth win at the expense of the previously undefeated Catmon, 25-24, 25-22.

Catmon bounced back in style, handing Talisay its first loss, 25-14, 25-14.

Meanwhile, the battle for the top spots in the women's divisions take place late this afternoon still as the CICC grounds.

Whoever wins between Mandaue and Catmon will emerge the top team of group B going into the semifinal round. The same scenario goes for Talisay and Liloan in group A.

Mandaue, Talisay, Lilo-an, and Catmon are all unscathed after five games, so far. (FREEMAN)
