CEBU, Philippines — As part of the government’s program to ensure food security, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Visayas (BFAR)-7 has allocated P2.5 million assistance to various fisherfolk organizations in the region.
At least 18 fisherfolk organizations received assistance through BFAR-7’s Post-Harvest Program. The assistance includes seminars and trainings to equip fisherfolk with the skills necessary to add value to their catch.
In Cebu, 13 fisherfolk associations received P1.9 million worth of equipment and technical demonstrations. In Bohol, four associations benefited from the P322,000 aid for processing utensils, while Negros Oriental received P250,000 for similar support.
BFAR-7 Aquacultural Technologist, Mikee Calibugar, said over Radyo Pilipinas Cebu that they facilitated sessions on various fish processing techniques, including fish preservation, deboning, drying, bottling sardines and milkfish, and proper product packaging to extend shelf life.
“Nag focus ni siya sa paglungtad sa kalidad ug pag preserba sa mga produkto human kini ma harvest ug ang pamaagi nga di dayon malikayan ang pagkadubok sa atong mga raw materials or atong mismong isda ug ang pataas pa sa shelf life niini,” said Calibugar.
BFAR-7 wants to help increase the profitability of local fisheries, allowing fisherfolk to earn more from their harvests. Equipment like freezers, pressure cookers and blenders, pasta makers, steamers, and various utensils were distributed to the identified beneficiaries.
Calibugar noted that these tools will significantly aid the beneficiaries, especially those just starting their fish processing businesses, allowing them to produce and market their desired products more effectively.
“Unta kining gamit nga among gi provide nila kay ilaha jung gamiton during na sa ilang pag proseso. Kanang magamit jud nila para sa ilang pag negosyo,” Calibugar added.
Moreover, seminars on food safety standards and good fish handling practices were being provided to ensure that their products meet the health and safety regulations. (CEBU NEWS)
