Alcover sets sights on city agriculture

CEBU, Philippines - From being an anti-communist leader, Cebu City councilor-elect Pastor Alcover Jr. will be shifting his advocacy to agriculture.

Alcover, however, clarified that his anti-communist group, the Alliance for Nationalism and Democracy, is still intact nationwide, but he would just focus on agriculture in the local level.

Alcover announced that he is eyeing the committee on agriculture in the City Council in order to address the concerns of farmers in the mountain barangays, which he would represent.

Alcover said he will focus on the mango and flower industries and will look into their low production.

"Cebu is famous sa sweetest mango, karon wa na, di na positive ang production, ngano man? We have to investigate," said Alcover during the 888 News Forum at the Marco Polo Plaza.

Alcover said the two industries are important to the city. He said the mango growers and flower farmers need assistance from the government.

"Dunay kakuwangan, importante kaayo ni apan kuwang sa supply," he said.

He said if the economic condition of farmers is good, there is peace and order in the mountain barangays as the two are interrelated.  (FREEMAN)
