CEBU, Philippines - Experts predict fine weather during the opening of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings here this weekend but also warn of erratic changes.
“For the opening of APEC... there will be a fine weather. We will expect the sunny period and temperature would likewise heat up,” said Engr. Oscar Tabada, Visayas director of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
A sunny weather means no flooding in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, the main host cities of the meetings. These cities experience quick flooding especially during a downpour.
However, Tabada said the entry of typhoon “Ineng” (international name “Goni” may bring about changes in weather conditions. The weather system has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility yesterday with maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 205 kph.
The typhoon, the ninth tropical cyclone to enter the country this year and second for the month, is likely to move west northwest at 20 kph.
The weather bureau said the typhoon will enhance the southwest monsoon or "habagat" which will bring rains over Visayas and Mindanao by Wednesday.
Tabada said special advisories will be released around the clock so that summit delegates will be guided, especially those who have plans to tour the city. These advisories will be coursed through the APEC National Organizing Committee.
Meanwhile, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has cancelled all days off and leave of absence of all traffic personnel, including enforcers and parking aides, from August 20 to September 7 so that the city will have enough manpower during the summit.
Their work schedule will also be extended to an additional hour. — (FREEMAN)
