MCWD: Sufficient water this summer

CEBU, Philippines - With summer days fast approaching, the Metropolitan Cebu Water District has assured consumers that there is enough water supply for Metro Cebu.

MCWD Acting General Manager Ernie Delco made the assurance during a press conference yesterday.

“Sa napulo nako katuig sa operations, karon ra ko nga malipayon nga moatubang ninyo nga wala tay water shortage,” he said, while noting the effects of a possible drought.

“In fact, we have a momentary water surplus,” he said.

Delco said MCWD could provide 202, 000 cubic meters each day from the Buhisan Dam in Buhisan, Cebu City and from their facilities in Compostela town and Talisay City.

“Ayaw mo kabalaka kon adunay El Nino nga maabot, we have enough water,” he said.

He further said their efficient water system has also contributed to the sufficient supply of water.

Delco said water sourced from Luyang River in the northern town of Carmen is around 18,000 cubic meters a day, which could serve 13,000 households, excluding commercial establishments.

The average consumption of every household with five members would reach to 24 cubic meters per month only.

Meanwhile, MCWD also announced yesterday that it would be starting the implementation of its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

Delco said the system would enable MCWD act on consumer’s complaints faster and make water distribution in their service area more efficient than when they did their operations manually.

The project was made possible through MCWD’s partnership with Yokohama Water Co. Ltd.

The SCADA system, Delco said, would help the water district in identifying the areas with low water pressure and their personnel could act on it quickly.

He said the system would also help MCWD administer to their non-revenue water, such as those provided for fire-stricken areas, as the system makes it possible to immediately send a team to spot a leak once there is a sudden drop of water pressure. — May B. Miasco/RHM (FREEMAN)
