UV gears for globalization for 100th year

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas is gearing up for globalization as it turns 100 years old in 2019.

“I do believe, in the future, we should adopt the modern ways of teaching. In Singapore, they have no classrooms there, they’ve changed everything. I want during our centennial celebration in 2019, UV will become a modern university that’s geared up for globalization and economic integration,” said UV Executive Vice President Jose R. Gullas.

Gullas said this is the reason why UV has been sending faculty members to other countries so they may learn new methods and edu-cational materials that the university can adopt.

“We send our faculty and staff in other universities (in the country and outside it), it’s been my program since. We’ll have more in the future, as we are trying to broaden UV. We should update ourselves, that’s very important,” he said.

Last month, a team from the College of Business Administration led by its dean, Rosemarie Español, visited Aletheia University in Taipei, Taiwan for a research conference on English language teaching and cross-cultural studies.

Doctor Brian Vasquez, the school’s director for Center for Research and Development, who was spoke at the Taiwan conference, said that aside from sharing UV’s teaching techniques, they were also able to explore possible linkages with Aletheia’s Department of Business Administration. He said they signed a memorandum of understanding with Aletheia, which would allow the two universities to exchange teaching materials, students, teachers, and business advising, among others.

“By this tie up, we hope to be able to strengthen our program, expose our faculty to the different culture in Taiwan, and improve our education here,” Vasquez said. — (FREEMAN)
