CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government has reminded the public on being vigilant and energy-thrifty in celebrating the Christmas season.
In a press release, Mayor Michael Rama encouraged everyone to celebrate the season while observing energy tips, especially on the usage Christmas lights.
The public is also reminded to be keen and vigilant in going out as they may fall prey to usual street crimes like pick-pocketing and holdup, or be victimized by unruly street carolers.
Rama said to save energy, everyone is encouraged to turn off lights and unplug devices immediately when not in use, set air-conditioners in timer mode or in a lower thermostat setting, open windows to prevent too much heat and avoid opening the refrigerator for a longer time.
When it comes to purchasing Christmas lights, consumers must buy quality lights instead of imitated products. They should also bear the Department of Trade and Industry’s certification logo.
Rama advised that once used, Christmas lights must also be monitored from time to time prevent overheating.
The public is also advised to unplug the lights during the day, overnight or when leaving the house, as well as to avoid the use of expensive decorations outside the house that could invite burglars.
The statement said residents must also be vigilant in dealing with carolers since burglars can also pretend as carolers.
Everyone is encouraged to report to the nearest police station if there are unruly street carolers roaming around the area, it added. (FREEMAN)
