How is the implementation of the Kasambahay Law?

CEBU, Philippines - A labor organization official will ask the Department of Labor and Employment-7, as well as members of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-7, on the status of implementation of the Kasambahay Law, which took effect in 2013.

“Mangutana mi ani kung unsa na… kay na obserbaran namo nga wala gyud ni na-implementar. Ug naimplementar man gani ni, ubos kaayo ang (We will ask because we have observed that it has not been implemented. If it is, there is a very low) compliance rate,” said Jose Tomongha, Alliance of Progressive Labor-Central Visayas chairman.

Tomongha, who is also the Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa spokesperson and one of the labor representatives to the RTWPB, said they want to know considering that the said law gives several benefits to domestic helpers.

The Kasambahay Law aims to ensure the social protection of household employees under various government agencies, which include the Social Security System, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or PhilHealth, and the Home Mutual Development Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund.

The law also gives domestic helpers the right to be free from any kind of abuse by the employer, the right to be provided with basic necessities, the right to privacy and access to outside communication, among others.  (FREEMAN)
