Tejero demolition ‘very peaceful’

CEBU, Philippines - The demolition of 39 houses in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City yesterday was said to be “very peaceful” unlike the one in sitio San Miguel, Barangay Apas.

This was according to Tejero barangay councilman Garry Lao.

“No commotion, no violence, walay kasikas and walay bagulgol ang mga affected residents sa demolition. Ang gipahigayon nga clearing was very peaceful, hapsay, malipayon ug wa gyuy gubot,” Lao said.

Over the weekend, the affected residents voluntarily dismantled their houses after receiving notice from the city government to vacate to give way to the “Road Restoration Project.”

Yesterday, the families have already cleared the remaining structures, making the job of the city’s Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Enhancement (PROBE) team “quite easy.”

“Murag sa Barangay Tejero ra gyod nahitabo nga voluntary niguba ang mga residente sa ilang mga panimalay bisan sakit ni ngadto nila,” Lao said.

The affected families opted to stay at their relatives’ houses instead at the temporary withholding center in Villagonzalo II in the barangay.

They will be receiving P10,000 financial assistance from the city government and will soon be relocated to Tabarno Property in Upper La Guerta, Barangay Lahug.

The “Road Restoration Project” was not completed last year due to some opposition.

The objection stemmed from the proposal of the city government to widen the road by 10 meters. However, after the series of discussions, it was reduced to seven meters.

The project covers the restoration of the new Aviola Street near the health center all the way to the Carreta boundary exits. This would connect Barangays Tejero and Carreta, both recently hit by fire.  (FREEMAN)
