Six quakes shake Leyte

CEBU, Philippines - Six successive earthquakes shook the province of Leyte yesterday, according to an abs-cbnnews.com report.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a magnitude 3.3 earthquake at 9:36 a.m. in the town of Kananga. Another magnitude 3.2 earthquake hit the town of Villaba at 10:32 a.m. Both earthquakes were not felt in the areas near the epicenter.

At 10:41 a.m., a magnitude 4.1 earthquake hit the town of Capoocan. It was felt at intensity 4 in Carigara, Leyte; intensity 3 in Pastrana and Isabel, Leyte and at intensity 2 in Barugo and Tacloban City.

The third earthquake was tectonic in origin, with a depth of three kilometers. According to Phivolcs, no damage is expected from the earthquake.

Less than an hour after the third earthquake, at around 11:19 a.m., a magnitude 3.1 earthquake hit the town of Kananga. Another magnitude 2.4 earthquake hit the town of Jaro, Leyte. It was felt at intensity 2 in Pastrana, Leyte

A sixth earthquake, at magnitude 3.8, hit the town of Tunga at 2:12 p.m. The earthquake is tectonic in origin, with a depth of two kilometers.

Phivolcs is not expecting any damage from the successive earthquakes, although the sixth earthquake was felt at intensity 4 in Carigara and Alang-alang, and at intensity 3 at Pastrana.

The agency added that no aftershocks are expected from the earthquakes. (FREEMAN)
