Road accidents kill woman, injure 7

CEBU, Philippines - A woman died while seven others were injured in another series of road accidents in Cebu last Saturday.

Ellena Villafuerte, 60, died on the spot after the motorcycle she was riding was accidentally hit by a Nissan Safari in Barangay Taloot in Argao town at 8 pm last Saturday.

Villafuerte’s companion, Jefferson Baclaan, was driving the motorcycle while bound for Argao town from Carcar City when the car, which was travelling the opposite direction, met them at a curve.

Villafuerte died immediately while Baclaan, who suffered injuries, was taken to a district hospital and the car driver, Ricardo Cambarijan, 36, was held in police custody.

Meanwhile, Faustino Delica, 71, and Wilfredo Payda, 50, were also injured after the septuagenarian accidentally sideswiped the latter’s motorcycle along Barangay Mangga, Tuburan town at 5 pm.

Investigation showed that Delica, who was heading south, maneuvered his Nissan Safari to the right lane but his vehicle got in touch with Payda’s motorcycle. Both of them suffered bruises due to the impact.

In another incident, drivers of two motorcycles were also injured after they collided into each other in Liloan town last Saturday.

Victims Mario Tibon and Jennel Monta are currently being treated at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City after they accidentally bumped into each other along Barangay Poblacion at 3 pm.

Rennel Tan also got injured when an SUV vehicle driven by Normel Fernandez accidentally bumped into his motorcycle in Barangay Dakit, Barili town at 6 pm.

Just last Friday, three sugarcane plantation workers died while at least 37 others were injured after the cargo truck that they were riding fell into a 15-meter ravine in Barangay Ilihan, Tabogon town.

The accident happened five days after a Ceres bus also figured in an accident that left two people dead and 32 passengers wounded.  (FREEMAN)
