Woman tries to jump off Mactan bridge

CEBU, Philippines - A mentally challenged woman in her late 20's was rescued by the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) after she attempted to jump off the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge at around 6 am yesterday.

The woman who remained to be unidentified as of press time was rescued after she went down through the railings of the bridge and positioned herself at the steel beams.

She was wearing a body fit black sleeveless shirts and leggings and while positioning herself, she was mentioning court cases and some of the provisions of the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines.

Henry Heyrosa of ERUF said that it took them more than an hour to neutralize her as they first negotiated by asking what they can help while they also kept asking for her name.

Instead the woman reportedly shouted back at them by telling to leave her alone.

At around 7:45 am, a rescuer managed to get near the woman and suddenly grabbed her hand and held tightly so she could not jump.

Immediately his companions helped him and tied the woman with a rope in her hands and body to pull her out easily.

The woman was brought immediately to the Psychiatric Ward of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City on board the ERUF ambulance.

No relatives of the woman yet came to the hospital to identify her yesterday.

The scenario has created a traffic congestion along the bridge.

A traffic enforcer of Lapu-Lapu City said the traffic was just flowing but was slow because there were vehicles of the police, an ambulance of the ERUF on stood by at the bridge. (FREEMAN)
