2 TF journos win Justice Award Mechelle Florita/RHM

CEBU, Philippines - Two The FREEMAN journalists are ending 2013 with a bang after receiving top honors in the 2013 Justice Awards.

Rene U. Borromeo won third place in the print news feature category while Kristine B. Quintas, a former radio dyLA reporter, got first place in the audio hard news category.

“Dapat mo-present og facts. Dili biased. And be sensitive to the feelings sa mga victims,” said Quintas, when asked on what a media practitioner should remember when covering human trafficking cases.

For the audio hard news category, Astra Zina Logarta of DyHP took second place. 

Ador Vincent Mayol of Cebu Daily News (CDN) won first place both in the print hard news and in the print news feature categories. Sun.Star Cebu’s Kevin Lagunda and Jerome Dalipe took second and third place, respectively, in the print hard news category.

CDN’s Jose Santino Bunachita, on the other hand, won second place for the print news feature category.

GMA-7’s Alan Domingo got first place for both video hard news and the video news feature categories. He was followed by TV5’s King Anthony Perez, who took home second place for the video feature news category.

“Ang media practitioners motabang para masugpo ang (must help to curtail) human trafficking dinhi sa (here in) Cebu,” said Cebu City Councilor Lea Japson, head of the City Council committee on women and family affairs.

The contest was judged by representatives from the International Justice Mission, Cebu Alliance of Mass Communication Students, and the Peace and Conflict Journalism Network (Pecojon’s).

“We must always remember that by exposing human trafficking to the public, we are already winners,” said Pecojon’s Charlie Saceda. (FREEMAN)
