Ex-barangay captain sued over gun firing

CEBU, Philippines -  A criminal complaint for alarm and scandal was filed before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office on Monday against the former barangay captain of Day-as, Cebu City who fired his government-issued gun accidentally last November 30.

Rey Cañada, 50, was arrested by the Pari-an Police after his 9mm pistol went off while residents in the barangay and his supporters were watching a replay of the Pacquiao-Rios fight around 9:40 pm.

The incident happened just a few hours before Cañada’s term as barangay captain ended.

SPO1 Maximo Lapa said Cañada’s supporters declined to issue statements, but a few others who were in the area said the ex-barangay captain “was not trying to shoot someone.”

It was Senior Insp. Ardoelito Cabagnot and company who apprehended Cañada. It so happened that Cabagnot’s group passed by the area from manning a checkpoint when the incident happened.

Cañada was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) for liquor test and was found positive.

Aside from a complaint for alarm and scandal, Cañada is also facing a complaint for violating City Ordinance 1929 for drunkenness.  (FREEMAN)
