Shootout with police leaves gunman dead

CEBU, Philippines - A shootout between an armed person and the police left one dead and injured two others yesterday afternoon in Barangay Poblacion, Barili.

Police received reports of an armed person at the store’ owned by barangay captain Elma Bargamento.

Upon arrival, the police introduced themselves but Arlie Satinitigan, 26, of Barangay Poblacion III, Carcar City, reportedly threw a hand grenade at them.

Fortunately, the grenade did not explode.

This prompted Satinitigan to draw his 9mm Armscor pistol and shot Chief Insp. Arvi Arbuis, Barili police chief, who was hit in his left shoulder.

Satinitigan then fired again and hit PO2 Pablito Caadlawon in the left arm.

But Arbuis managed to return fire with his .45 pistol and hit Satinitigan several times.

Satinitigan died of fatal shots.

Arbuis and Caadlawon were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

"Si Caadlawon i-adto sa VSMMC kay medyo grabe to iyaha ako madala ra man, (Caadlawon will be brought to VSMMC because he has serious injuries.)" Arbuis said in a phone interview.

Police recovered four empty shells and slugs from the scene.

Arbuis disclosed that Satinitigan has a pending arrest warrant for murder after he allegedly killed his neighbor in 2005. — (FREEMAN)
