‘Mega’ job fair next month

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government will hold a “mega” job fair this September to be participated by about 60 private companies in order to help jobseekers in Cebu City find employment.

When the City Hall’s Department of Manpower Development and Placement conducted 25 small job fairs from January to June 30 this year, there were 1,513 individuals hired on the spot.

DMDP head Suzanne Ardoza said aside from those who were hired on the spot, there were dozens of other jobseekers accepted for work abroad after the follow-up interviews.

She also said that the DMDP is planning to have a so-called Employer’s Forum where they want to get the sentiments of the employers and ask for suggestions how the DMDP can improve its services to the public.

Meanwhile, Ardoza said she wants to improve the services of her department by recommending to Mayor Michael Rama for the purchase of additional equipment that can be used for the students.

DMDP is offering several vocational courses like computer literacy, automative repair, dressmaking, tailoring, cosmetology, practical electricity and other short-term vocational courses.

Ardoza had recommended to the Local Finance Committee that the DMDP’s annual budget of P16.6 million for 2013 will be raised to P20 million so that the city can have a budget for the needed additional equipment.   (FREEMAN)
