Rama orders massive campaign vs. karera

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has ordered a massive operation against video karera gambling machine in two urban barangays.

Rama has directed city police director, Sr. Supt.  Mariano Natuel, to conduct massive operation in Barangay Pasil and Barangay Suba during night time.

The mayor said he has committed during his inaugural speech before the members of the city council to curb all illegal gambling and drug peddling operations throughout the 80 barangays of the city.

The mayor is tasked under the Republic Act 8551 or The New Police Act of 1998 to campaign against all forms of illegal gambling. The mayor is granted under the law to supervise the police assigned within his territorial jurisdiction.

Two officials of Barangay Suba and Pasil — both densely-populated barangays under the territorial jurisdiction of San Nicolas Police Station – told The Freeman that the video karera operations in their respective areas have become rampant.

It has stopped for a while after the police conducted series of operations following the assumption to office of Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel “Mar’ Roxas.

Rama said Natuel should see to it that the elements of San Nicolas Police Station will do their job against illegal gambling operations. – (FREEMAN)
