CEBU, Philippines - Three cellular phones, owned by a Korean car dealer who was killed in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City, last Saturday, were submitted to the Digital Forensic Crime Laboratory-7 yesterday afternoon for the extraction of files which will be later used in the investigation.
Digital forensic experts will be examining two iPhones and another cellular phone owned by Yi Sung Jung.
Chief Insp. Michael Virtudazo, chief of the crime laboratory, said that it will only take them a day to extract files from the said cellular phones.
Virtudazo explained that it is easier to extract files from ordinary cellular phones than from smartphones and iPhones. However, they have the equipment to do this.
Extracting data from smartphones would take about six to eight hours.
Virtudazo added that as requested by Sr. Insp. Ramil Morpos, chief of the Police Station 5 in Barangay Casuntingan, they were asked to extract text messages prior to the shooting incident.
“They wanted the text messages to check the mastermind of the shooting incident,†Virtudazo said.
Yi, from South Korea, and his driver, Sonny Ubal, 42, were on board an SUV bound for Cebu City when two men on a motorcycle opened fire at them around 3:30 p.m. in Barangay Banilad.
Yi sustained several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body. Ubal was wounded in his right hand.
The assailants, who covered their faces with scarves, were last seen fleeing towards Cebu City.
The two victims were brought to the nearby Gullas Medical Center where the Korean was pronounced dead on arrival. (FREEMAN)
