ASEAN “Dengue Day” draws support from academe

CEBU, Philippines - Apart from health sector and local government units, the academe also participated in the 3rd ASEAN Dengue Day.

Saturday’s national anti-dengue campaign also gathered public and private school learners who have either joined the poster and cheer dance competition or cheered for their respective contestants.

Audience and visitors led by Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique Ona, Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag, Regional Director Asuncion Anden were entertained and educated by two participating universities for the cheer dance competition.

Performances of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters focused on information campaign against dengue fever with the DOH campaign jingle played in between heart-stopping stunts and choreography.

Tayag and Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) Dancing Inmates’ choreographer Vince Rosales were among the judges.

The dancing health official and the dancing inmates earlier did a collaboration when Tayag danced the anti-dengue campaign jingle at the CPDRC facility.

The video was launched during the ASEAN Dengue Day.

Earning the nod of the judges was the performance of UV Green Lancers winning P10,000.

Public school students in their school uniforms displayed artistry in line with dengue prevention at the poster making competition.

A total of 13 elementary school participants and 15 more for high school. Chosen as the best poster for elementary category is the representative from Labangon Elementary School followed by second placer from Tejero Elementary School while the third place went to Lahug Elementary School.

Cebu City National Science High School bagged the first place for the high school category, with Bulacao National High School got the second place, and Pardo National High School proclaimed third place.

Cebu City government also received given mosquito nets and larvicides from the DOH to aid its efforts on dengue fever prevention.—(FREEMAN)
