CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Government awarded 75 teachers who are retirees during the Teachers’ Day Celebration the other night at the Plaza Independencia.
Aside from the retirees, two teachers were also especially awarded for their exemplary performance - Neri Biaño of Binaliw Elementary School and Rebecca Ouano, the district ALS Coordinator of Tejero Elementary School
“The Awards of Recognition (are given) to the retirees being considered as second parents. Their role is vital to the students especially in teaching moral values,” said Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
Teachers in Cebu City will also have a brighter Christmas with the announcement of Rama to give P10,000 cash to over 5,000 teachers in the city.
As to when the amount will be given remains to be scheduled, Rama said. He will still consult DSWS head Esther Concha for the schedule of the distribution.
Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Superintendent Dr. Rheamar Angtud is glad with the increase as this will be a big help to them financially.
Angtud said that in the previous years, they got P5,000 but now Rama is doubling the monetary aid.
Meanwhile, Young received many complaints from the teachers as it was raining heavily but he encouraged all of them to think positive.
Young said that the celebration of the Teachers’ Day in Cebu City has been celebrated for over 20 years now, not simultaneous with the national celebration, which is usually on October.
The Teachers’ Day was originally scheduled last November 30, but was postponed due to the National thanksgiving Mass in honor of San Pedro Calungsod.
“I wish to thank all the teachers of Cebu City especially those whose passion for teaching had been proven by the test of time. Indeed, it takes diligence, discipline and determination to be able to uphold the same esteem for years in this field of noble work,” Young said.
Also gracing the event was UNA Deputy Secretary and senatorial candidate Nancy Binay, who attended the event in behalf of his father, Vice President Jejomar Binay.
She considers teachers as heroes especially those who stay in the country even if they could get a bigger salary abroad. —/JPM (FREEMAN)
