CEBU, Philippines — Russian nationals in Cebu gathered together at the Museo Sugbo open-air grounds on May 9 to celebrate one of Russia’s grandest national holiday celebrations – “Victory Day.”
No less than Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Anatolyevich Khovaev led the celebrations, which included a wreath laying ceremony to a monument of acclaimed Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy located within the museum compound.
Present during the occasion were Russian consul Denis Karenin, Cebu governor Hilario Davide Jr. and Russian Federation honorary consul Armi Lopez Garcia.
“Victory Day” is a national holiday in Russia, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. It is traditionally marked with the “Victory Day Parade” in the Red Square in Moscow.
Last Wednesday’s observance of the Russian holiday marked the 73rd year anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. It was so far the grandest “Victory Day” celebration in Cebu. (YRST)
