A Fun Idea for a Family Activity

"Volunteer Together"

CEBU, Philippines - Consider it quality time multiplied: You get to spend the day with your kids, they learn about the joy of helping others, and everybody makes the world a better place.

Choose a volunteer activity by taking a cue from the things that your kids love. If he's obsessed with dogs, he'll enjoy collecting supplies for the animals at the City Pound; if she's a nature lover, she will find it fun joining a trail cleanup to the nearby woods.

What's appropriate for the child's age? Kathy Saulitis of generationOn, a nonprofit foundation based in New York City that partners with youth service groups, has a few suggestions: Young children might visit a nursing home or make cards for people in hospitals, while older kids can collect slightly used items for a rummage sale or organize a kiddie task force for cleaning the yards of elderly people in the community.
