CEBU, Philippines - When GMA-7 launched “Out†in 2004, the first-ever magazine show about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, it showed how difficult and heart-touching it is for gay and lesbian people to come out of the closet.
Through various features, the show presented the different faces of the so-called “third sex†and their moving stories. And these gave others a new understanding on the plight of the LGBT community.
In celebration of the Gay Pride Month this June, GMA Network takes a look back on what has happened to the Pinoy LGBT community a decade after the magazine show was first broadcasted through the special documentary “Out and Proud†airing tomorrow night, on SNBO.
“Out and Proud†reveals the various changes and current issues that Filipino LGBTs are still facing today. Are they more accepted now? Is the Philippines really worthy to be called the “Most Gay-friendly Country in Asia
Also featured in the documentary is the radical change in the television programming during the past decade. The broadcasting industry has seen a heavy influx of movies and TV shows with gay theme as the phenomenal “My Husband’s Lover.†Many see these programs as a sign that the society is more open and accepting of gays and lesbians now.
But were the portrayals of LGBTs on these programs show a positive image of the community or they just emphasize the stigma on gays and lesbians?
The documentary also tackles relevant issues that are affecting the Filipino LGBTs such as same sex marriage, which most people say would be impossible to be legalized in the Philippines, and the long awaited passing of an anti-discrimination bill.
Featured in “Out and Proud†are LGBT advocates Director Joey Reyes, BB Gandanghari, Rose Fontanes, engaged couple Aiza Seguerra and Liza Diño, married partners Jun Lana and Perci Intalan, Eat Bulaga’s Super Sireyna Francine Garcia, Miss International Beauty Queen 2012 Kevin Balot, as well as former Out! hosts JM Cobarrubias, Avi Siwa and celebrity make-up artist Jigs Mayuga.
Hosted by Vicky Morales, “Out and Proud,†a GMA News and Public Affairs special, airs this Sunday, right after “Imbestigador.†(FREEMAN)
