CEBU, Philippines - Philippine Fo Guang Shan (FGS) and Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Cebu Chapter present “Siddhartha: A Musical Journey to Enlightenment,†a stage play about the life of the Buddha and his exodus to enlightenment. The musical highlights relevant existential themes where one can draw meaning in trying to live a morally meaningful life.
“Siddhartha†tells us the moral lesson that Buddhism advocates. It is about life and how we must always live in moderation as the Noble eightfold path dictates. It is all about the basic teaching of compassion that should be practiced by everyone regardless of skin color, religion, or status. It is all about the universal challenge of suffering that seems to be in our midst and how we out to emerge as victorious from every calamity and every fall. The Buddha likens us to a lotus flower, although coming from murky waters, it can still bloom beautifully.
Looking back, it was in 2007 when the first staging of the musical was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. Since then, over 47 shows have been performed here and abroad. And because of the clamor, the entire ensemble was invited to perform in the United States this Nov. 23 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of FGS Hsi Lai Temple in Pasadena Los Angeles California.
This invitation is a momentous event as it hosts and welcomes FGS delegates from all over the world to take part in this silver anniversary celebration. The staging of the play is not just an ordinary affair but a convergence of cultures and a dialogue of spirit.
What’s more, “Siddhartha†showcases the cream of Cebuano talents who excel in theater arts. Witness live singing, vivacious dancing, soulful acting, a coming together of aesthetic traditions rolled into one moving performance.
To kick off their musical tour, “Siddhartha†will be shown on tomorrow, Nov. 9, at the SM Cinema 1. Matinee show starts at 2 p.m. and gala show starts at 7 p.m. For ticket inquiries, call the Chu Un Temple Cebu at (032)253-8144.
