Telco gives app developers direct access to services

CEBU, Philippines - Developers will soon be able to directly integrate the network resources of Smart Communications, Inc. with their web and mobile applications, with the upcoming launch of the Smart API (application programming interface).

The Smart API, which is currently available in beta “freemium” version, will allow developers to create apps that leverage on network capabilities such as SMS, MMS, voice, and operator billing.

For example, developers can use the middleware to build apps that send alerts and notifications via SMS.

“The Smart API will open a lot of opportunities for developers. Aside from giving them direct access to the SMS and MMS capabilities of the Smart network, it can also help them earn from their apps by letting users pay via operator billing or Smart Money. It can even allow them to enable geo-location functions via network-based location,” said Smart developer evangelist Paul Pajo.

Developers can test the Smart API by registering at http://developer.smart.com.ph. A developer has to have a Smart SIM and be a member of the Smart Developer Network (Smart DevNet) to gain direct access to the Smart API.

“Right now, only content provider companies can connect to our services to create products for our subscribers. But once the Smart API is launched, developers can access our network capabilities directly,” Pajo said.

“This will benefit all parties – developers will have the opportunity to connect with Smart’s 57 million subscribers, while ordinary users will be able to enjoy more apps and services,” he added.

Smart DevNet is Smart’s developer community program which was launched in mid-2012 to train the spotlight on Filipino software developers, and to encourage them to create globally competitive mobile apps and websites. It has become one of the country’s fastest-growing online communities, with more than 6,000 members less than two years after its inception. (FREEMAN)
