MANILA, Philippines — One up for the green side.
The De La Salle University Lady Spikers overcame the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20 in the 80th UAAP women's volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Saturday.
The Lady Spikers capitalized on the Lady Eagles' faulty floor defense and fired 16 service aces.
Kim Dy led the defending champions with 21 points.
Four other Lady Spiker finished in double digits with Tin Tiamzon's 13 points, Des Cheng's 11 and Aduke Ogunsanya and Majoy Baron's 10 apiece.
"Ito na yung maturity (na hinahanap ko)," head coach Ramil de Jesus told press after their win.
The Lady Eagles looked like they were going to run away in the third set, 21-11.
But La Salle erased the deficit to send the set to an extension, before Ateneo mounted their own 4-0 blitz to extend the match.
Jhona Maraguinot paced the Lady Eagles, who will finish the first round with a 4-3 card, with 13 points.
The Lady Spikers, meanwhile, will end the first round with 5-2, tied with the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws for the second spot.
