MANILA, Philippines – Willie Torres and Richmond dela Rosa gear up for a fierce showdown as they vie for the Yokohama GT Driver of the Year plum in the final leg of the Yokohama Philippine Grand Touring Car Championship Series tomorrow at the Clark International Speedway in Clark, Pampanga.
Torres has pooled 230 points to secure the GT300 title over last year’s champion Dondon Portugal but the W Autosports Racing ace trails Dela Rosa of GT200, 140-151, in the battle for the overall crown in the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP), and sponsored by Yokohama, the official tires, and Sparco.
Up for grabs in their final showdown is 60 points with Torres out to top both the Sprint and GT Main race to foil Dela Rosa for the coveted crown and join the elite circle of circuit racing champions in Philippine motorsports history.
The 10-lap Sprint race will be held in the morning to be followed by the 17-lap GT final.
Aside from Torres, Dela Rosa is also out to fend off archrival and defending champion Paolo Mantolino and Walter Zamora for the GT200 crown and AAP’s Driver of the Year award.
Dela Rosa leads the GT200 class with 227 points, two points ahead of Zamora while Mantolino is at third overall with 124 points.
Others competing in the event are Patrick dela Rosa, NR Joaquin and Dindo de Jesus in the GT150 class, and Ivan Diaz, Joginder King Sin and Edwin Rodriguez in the GT100 division.
Also on tap are the championship races in the PhilMiniracers Classic Mini Championship Series, the Classic Aspirated Cup, Sparco Cup Bracket Race, Sparco Cup Club Race and the resumption of the DTM Revival races.
