MANILA, Philippines — Indian Aces’ Gael Monfils notched his second win in the hostilities in Vienna, early Friday.
Monfils defeated Paolo Lorenzo of Italy, 6-4, 6-4 to advance into the third round of the Erste Bank Open men’s singles action.
The Frenchman, who is currently ranked 21st in the ATP ladder, converted 71% of his first serve points (30 of 42) to overwhelm the Italian. Monfils added pressure with 10 aces, doubling his foe’s.
Lorenzo, who was just crowned the Medellin Chellenger champion was only able to return 36% of his shots (23 of 64). He bows out of Vienna contention.
Monfils, who will see action alongside Rafael Nadal under the Aces’ banner, will face Czech netter Lukáš Rosol next.
Monfils is the tournament’s sixth seed.
The Aces are set to display their wares in the second season of the International Premier Tennis League slated this December.
