MANILA, Philippines — The Star Hotshots infused young blood to their roster after signing former La Salle big man Norbert Torres to a two-year deal worth P4.2 million on Friday.
Torres, tipped to finish among the top three picks in last month's Gatorade PBA is Rookie Draft, fell to No. 8 when Rain or Shine opted to draft Fil-Nigerian guard Maverick Ahanmisi in a stunning move that defied all mock drafts.
"No. 8 kami and we were really looking at tapping Ahanmisi, kaya nagulat kami nung available pa so Norbert at No. 8 sa first round," Star board governor Rene Pardo told Philstar.com.
Pardo said the 6-foot-6 Torres is a solid big man who can extend the defense because of his outside shooting, along with his ability to play at the post.
The amiable Star team executive explained that since their front court is not young anymore, Torres can come in and spell either Rafi Reavis or Mick Pennisi, who are now 38 and 40, respectively.
"Malaking tulong sa Amin si Norbert kasi may edad na din sina Mick saka Rafi," he added.
Meantime, Pardo said the 6-foot-11 Pennisi also inked a two-conference contract for the Hotshots recently.
The left-handed big man, acquired in the middle of last season from Barako Bull, averaged 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds.
Still a reliable outside gunner, Pennisi will be playing his 16th year next season.
Also set to sign a two-year contract extension is backup young center Yousef Taha.
