MANILA, Philippines - Metro Kidapawan’s Jiselle Joy Tomaroi topped two events in the girls’ under-19 division to lead the winners in the Mindanao leg of the Sun Cellular Badminton tournament at the Smash N’ Drop Badminton Center in San Pedro Extension, Davao City over the weekend.
Tomaroi bested Butuan City’s Erika Jane Pedroza Acalayen, 21-14, 21-7, to snare the singles title then teamed up with Marinel Diansay in routing Metro Kidapawan teammates Michelle Kate Alvarez and Reajoy Saquian, 21-9, 21-6, for the doubles crown.
Tomaroi, Acalayen and the other division winners of the leg sponsored by Sun Cellular, Smart, MVP Sports Foundation, PBA, Smash Pilipinas, Victor exclusively distributed by Pcome Industrial Sales, Inc., Bayfront Hotel Cebu, JC Centre Mandaue, thus earned berths in the national finals set Sept. 26-27 at the J Centre Mandaue in Banilad, Cebu.
Jerrickson Tapales of Team Prima-La Salle turned back Kristian Paolo Barrios of Space Shuttle Kidapawan, 21-16, 21-15, to top the boys’ U-19 side of the tournament sanctioned by the Phl Badminton Association and organized by Forthright Events.
Josh Olin Defensor of Metro Kidapawan and Michael Saragena of La Salle later denied Tapales a second crown after subduing the latter and Whackers Badminton Academy’s Deon Ronald Omana, 21-15, 16-21, 27-25, for the doubles plum.
The Kidapawan tandem of Raymund Arnold Dequina and Marinel Avergonzaldo Diansay also beat teammates Giovine Subaldo and Michelle Kate Alvarez, 21-11, 21-10, to claim the mixed doubles title.
Ron Danelle Cabalquinto and Keith Aubrey Bidal also of Kidapawan edged Ateneo de Davao’s Joshua Meia Estremos and Sofia Milen Enriquez, 19-21, 21-16, 21-17, to cop the U-17 mixed doubles plum.
