MANILA, Philippines - Judiciary seeks to become the first back-to-back champion in the UNTV Cup as the annual basketball tournament for public servants stages its fourth season beginning today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
With an almost intact lineup, headed by former PBA players Don Camaso and Ariel Capus and John Hall, the Magis are upbeat of their chances for a repeat after sweeping the Malacañang Patriots in the best-of-three title series last April to clinch their second title in the event organized by UNTV led by its CEO Daniel Razon.
The Magis, however, will have to work doubly hard this time as the rest in the 12-team field, including newcomer Ombudsman, have firmed up their respective rosters in their bid to stop Judiciary’s back-to-back bid.
“The field is almost even this time so we expect a wide open race for the championship,” said Razon, known in the broadcasting industry as “Mr. Public Service.” “But expect some surprises with all teams determined to win the P2 million prize.”
The champion’s prize, however, will go to its chosen charity. The runner-up gets P1 million. The schedule of the games will be known after today’s drawing of lots.
UNTV bigwigs, led by Razon and Gerry Panghulan, are expected to grace the opening ceremony along with some government officials.
