MANILA, Philippines – The Mapua Cardinals, Xavier School and San Benildo waylaid their opponents over the weekend to move in contention for quarterfinals berths in the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament.
The Cardinals, led by Melvin Raflores, turned back Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 96-59, at the St. Placid gym of the San Beda College-Manila campus in the Saturday games of this cagefest, which is supported by Bauerfeind supports and orthoses, and medical compression stockings, and Wang’s Basketball.
Lorenzo Castelltort led San Benildo to a 90-48 swamping of Lyceum Philippines University in the junior division.
Tyler Tio showed the way for Xavier School as they won over Adamson, 69-51, over at the Far Eastern University gym in Morayta, and in another secondary boys encounter last Sunday.
The Cards, with Raflores shooting 13 points, have a 4-1 win-loss record, and they remain contenders for one of two quarterfinal seats in Group B.
Castelltort fired 16 points for San Benildo, which stayed on top of Group A in the junior side, and in contention for a quarterfinal berth.
The Xavier School Stallions are ahead in Group B at 5-1, and are tipped to earn the top quarterfinal seat in their bracket.
San Beda-A, which is also in contention for a quarterfinals seat, finished their senior division Group A assignment the other weekend with a 6-1 win-loss record, after stopping College of St. Benilde, 77-73, in overtime.
In the other matches, Technological Institute of the Philippines-A won over Letran-A, 52-49, while University of the East defeated College of St. Benilde, 63-48.
Arellano University prevailed over St. Michael-Laguna, 86-70.
