Altas, Lions, Archers pick up Fr. Martin Cup wins

MANILA, Philippines – University of Perpetual Help, San Beda-A and De La Salle University put away separate foes over the weekend in the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament.

Akhuetie Bright topscored for 21 points as the UPHSD Altas won over Jose Rizal University, 65-58, Sunday at the Far Eastern University gym in Morayta.

Francis Abarcar shot 23 points, including six crucial points in overtime as the San Beda-A Red Lions turned back Ateneo, 81-76, Saturday over at the St. Placid gym of the San Beda College-Manila campus in this cagefest, which is supported by Bauerfeind supports and orthoses, and medical compression stockings, and Wang’s Basketball.

Newcomer Josh Torralba unloaded 16 points for the La Salle Green Archers as they swamped St. Michael-Laguna, 81-65.

With their sixth win in seven games, the Altas bagged the first of two quarterfinal slots in Group A, while the Red Lions are on target for the other seat in Group B after posting their fifth triumph in six matches.

The Green Archers, with Daryl Pascual and Benoit Mbala backed up Torralba with 15 and 13 points, stayed in contention for a quarterfinal berth in Group A with the JRU Heavy Bombers, with both sharing the same 3-3 win-loss slate.

The Red Lions (5-1) and Ateneo (4-2) are among the top candidates for the quarterfinals in Group B.

Commissioner Robert de la Rosa said the top two finishers in each bracket will mostly like make it to the quarterfinals.

In other matches, Chris Almario and Ivan Lagman made 11 each for Technological Institute of the Philippines-B as they prevailed over Letran-B.

In the junior division, Mapua stopped National University, 74-56, to improve at 3-2 in Group B.
