Roach wary of Algieri’s style, jab

MANILA, Philippines - Freddie Roach is not fond of the fighting style of Chris Algieri, Manny Pacquiao’s opponent for his Nov. 23 bout in Macau.

Nevertheless, the multi-titled trainer is confident they can deal with the undefeated New Yorker.

Speaking to Scott Christ of badlefthook.com, Roach noted how Algieri loves to move around instead of engaging his opponent, something that won’t sit well with Pacquiao.

“His style, he’s a bit of a runner. Pacquiao doesn’t particularly like fighting guys who run so much,” the bespectacled cornerman said.

Algieri’s height and range could also pose a problem for the Filipino icon, and the American isn’t really known to go for knockouts. In 20 fights, the 5-foot-10 Algieri has only stopped eight opponents.

Instead, the WBO light welterweight champion prefers to use the jab and maintain distance, with his promoter Joe DeGuardia recently declaring he’ll beat Pacquiao with it.

Roach, for his part, acknowledged Algieri efficiency in using boxing’s most basic punch.

“We’ll figure out a way to beat him. It’s not a problem. He’s got a good jab. That’s it,” he said.

Pacquiao and Algieri will face off at the CotaiArena of the Venetian Resort in Macau.
