PSL to award cash incentives to swim record breakers in Coseteng Cup

MANILA, Philippines - To raise the level of competition, the Philippine Swimming League (PSL) will award cash incentives to national and junior record breakers in the fifth Sen. Nikki Coseteng Cup June 28- 29 at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool in Manila.

PSL president Susan Papa said a swimmer who would break a national record in the seniors division will get P8,000, and a national junior record breaker P3,000.

“It’s one way of raising the level of play. We want to see them push themselves to achieve their goals. We saw a lot of potential swimmers in our previous legs and by giving them this kind of competition, we could monitor their progress,” Papa said.

The event, the 59th leg of the PSL series, will be the final tryout for National Capital Region swimmers vying for slots in the World University Games slated next year in Gwangju, South Korea.

The PSL will also pick outstanding swimmers for the Royal Bangkok Meet later this year in Thailand.

“We would like to thank Magnolia for always supporting us. This event is open to all swimmers. No membership requirement. We’re inviting everyone to join and be part of this exciting event,” added Papa.

All eyes will be on University of the Philippines standout Denjylie Cordero who will be gunning for records in the women’s breaststroke event. During her junior years, Cordero smashed records in the 14-15 100-meter (1:15.26), 14-15 200m (2:37.50) and 13-under 200m (2:42.94).

Her younger sisters Delia Angela and Dennise are also expected to go all out, as well as fellow UP tanker Christen Mercado, a record holder in the Palarong Pambansa.

Other swimmers to watch are Sean Terence Zamora of University of Santo Tomas, McTracy Alindogan of Angeles University Foundation and Martin Jacob Pupos of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta.

Deadline for submission of entries is June 21.

PSL is the national sports association for schools of the Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines, an affiliate of the International Federation of University Sports (FISU), organizer of the Universiade.
