MANILA, Philippines - This year’s edition of the K-Swiss ITU Subic International Triathlon (SUBIT) at the Subic Bay Freeport slated April 26-27 promises to be the biggest ever on account of its character as a 5-in-1 affair.
Organizing Triathlon Association of the Philippines secretary general Mon Marchan heads the local organizing committee of the K-Swiss ITU SUBIT which retains its status as Asia Cup series event. Sarita Zafra, Ting Joson and Anton Tangan are members of the organizing committee.
As Asia Cup series leg, SUBIT stakes ITU points for elite athletes (local and international) eyeing to better their world and Asian rankings. Adding to the international flavor of the SUBIT is the second Asian Paratriathlon Championships whose inaugural was also staged in conjunction with SUBIT.
At the local level, SUBIT, sponsored by Century Tuna, Asian Center for Insulation Phil., Gatorade, Speedo, Standard Insurance, David’s Salon, SBMA and Green Triathlon, serves as national age-group championship, inter-club competition and national triathlon tryout.
TRAP dangles an all-expense-paid participation of age-group male and female overall champions to one of the tourneys of the Asia Cup series this year as incentive.
The winning squad in the inter-club tilt claims the bragging rights as the national triathlon club champion.
Berths in the national team to various international triathlons, including the Incheon Asian Games and the Asian Beach Games in Phuket, and the national pool are up for grabs in SUBIT’s tryouts phase.
Elite juniors, sprint distance (750m swim – 20K bike – 5K run) age-groupers including novice adults, Youth Olympic Games hopefuls now training under coaches Anthony Lozada and Melvin Fausto and the Paratriathletes see action on the first day.
All standard distance (1.5K swim- 40K bike-10 K run) triathletes composed of the elite, under-23, age-groupers and inter-club competitors hog the limelight on the final day.
Entry fees are pegged at P3,500 for standard distance, P3,000 for sprint and YOG, and P5,000 for sprint relay until Feb. 15. International participants will pay fees of US$150 for standard distance, US$125 for sprint and mini sprint and US$250 for sprint relay.
