Canlas turns back Canizares in Philta juniors

MANILA, Philippines - Fourth seed Calvin Charles Canlas stunned third pick Argil Lance Canizares, 6-1, 6-3, over the weekend to clinch the boys’ 18-under title in the Philippine Columbian Association Juniors Tennis Championships at the PCA outdoor courts.

Sharing the honors with Canlas in the tournament presented by Cebuana Lhuillier were Vince Salas, Cenon Gonzales Jr., Marcus del Rosario and Daniel Estanislao III.

The unseeded Canlas took the boys’ 14-under crown over fifth seed Julian Dayrit, 6-4, 6-2, third seed Gonzales waylaid No. 7 Raphael Teng, 6-0, 6-1, in the boys’ 14-under category, top pick Del Rosario won the boys’ 12-under title over second seed Janus Ringia, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 3 Estanislao upset second seed Miguel Luis Vicencio, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the 10-under unisex title.

In the girls division, No. 4 Jzash Canja downed third seed Hannah Espinosa to rule the 18-under class.

Also winning their respective categories were third seed Erika Manduriao (16-under), top seed Rafaella Jean Villanueva (14-under) and unseeded Miles Vitaliano (12-under).

In the doubles category, top seeds Vince Salas and Eric Olivarez Jr. copped the boys’ 18-under title over second seeds Jose Nicholas Cano and Dave Sebastian Mosqueda, 6-4, 1-6, 10-16, while second seeds Cenon Gonzales and Manuel Balce III defeated unranked Jose Maria Pague and Fahd Kennette Banico, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-5 to claim the boys’ 14-under crown.
