MANILA, Philippines - The 14th Canlubang Amateur Open next week will serve as the qualifying rounds for the Philippine Amateur Match Play championship when it is played Oct. 9-11 at the North and South courses of the Canlubang Golf and Country Club in Laguna.
Reigning men’s and boys’ national champion Rupert Zaragosa heads the cast in the 54-hole centerpiece event presented by Petron with the top 16 finishers in the men’s side and eight in the women’s category will advance to the match play tournament slated the following week.
The organizing National Golf Association of the Phils. said registration is still open in all divisions, save for the Open where Zaragosa will be playing. Zaragosa lost to Korean expat Kim In-jae of Riviera by three strokes last year and is raring to redeem himself in the event presented by the MVP Sports Foundation and part of the PLDT Amateur Golf Tour.
Princess Superal of Team ICTSI, meanwhile, is likely to lead the chase for the ladies diadem in the 36-hole tournament along with teammates Mika Fortuna, Sofia Chabon, Abegail Arevalo and Junior World champion Pauline del Rosario.
Also on tap are Class A (11-and-below), Class B (12-18), Class C (19-and-above) to be played in the last two days along with the ladies.
Prizes will be given to the winner and the next three placers in the championship division and top two gross finishers and the top three net placers in the other categories of the annual tournament.
